Today, at a press conference that was live streamed to the world, Nokia announced the Lumia 920 Windows Phone 8 smartphone. The latest flagship handset from Nokia, which will be available later this year in yellow, red, grey, white and black color options at an undisclosed price-point, offers PureView camera innovation, new navigation experiences and wireless charging. A run down of the spec sheet reveals a 4.5″ PureMotion HD+ WXGA (1280×768) IPS ClearBlack LCD display with super sensitive touch feature for both nail & glove use, Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 1.5 GHz Dual Core processor, 1GB of RAM, 32GB of internal storage, an 8.7 megapixel PureView camera with optical image stabilization and Carl Zeiss optics (1080p video capture), 1.2MP front-facing camera with 720p HD video capture, NFC support, 2000 mAh battery, and pentaband LTE / HSPA+ connectivity.

The focus of the event was on the Lumia 920′s camera. Actually, Nokia goes out on a limb to claim that it captures the “best pictures and video ever seen on a smartphone.” Using advanced floating lens technology, the PureView camera can take in five times more light than competing smartphones without using flash. That means clearer, brighter pictures and videos in low-light settings. Nokia also briefly showcased the new augmented reality experience known as City Lens. Simply point the camera at a city street and City Lens overlays information about restaurants, stores, hotels and more on the surfaces of buildings.

QUOTES:
“Nokia PureView continues to deliver cutting-edge technology to make it possible for a smartphone camera to take the kind of images usually only seen on a standalone SLR camera,” said Jo Harlow, executive vice president of Nokia Smart Devices. “With the Nokia Lumia 920 we have made it possible to shoot pictures and video at home, outdoors, in a restaurant or even at night, and come out with professional-looking results.”

“We view imaging as a core area for differentiation in the smartphone space,” said Crawford Del Prete, Executive VP WW Products and Chief Research Officer, IDC. “Low light photography has been a weak point for smartphones. Nokia has addressed this with PureView to create real customer value. By applying its rich expertise in imaging Nokia has created a best of breed experience for everyday use.”

A variety of innovative accessories will be launched with the Lumia 920 as well, including the Fatboy Recharge Pillow, JBL PlayUp Portable Wireless Speaker, JBL PowerUp Wireless Charging Speaker, Nokia wireless charging plate, Nokia wireless charging stand, Nokia Luna Bluetooth Headset and Nokia Purity Pro Stereo Headset by Monster.
