LG has announced the development of the world’s first Wide Quad High Definition (WQHD or QHD) AH-IPS LCD panel for smartphones. The 5.5-inch Quad HD mobile display reportedly carries a resolution of 2560×1440, pixel density of 538 ppi and brightness of 430nit. It’s also said to be the world’s slimmest and narrowest panel to date.
“LG Display, which pioneered the high resolution mobile market with introduction of the world’s first Full HD smartphone panel in 2012, again opens new possibilities with the successful application of QHD technology,” said Dr. Byeong-koo Kim, Vice President and Head of LG Display’s IT and Mobile Development Group. “With this breakthrough, LG Display will continue to raise new standards for mobile resolution and lead the mobile display market.”
With four times more pixels than 1280×720 HD displays, the new panel promises to deliver clearer images, excellent color reproduction, improved contrast/vividness and optimal viewing experiences on large-screened mobile devices. Users will be able to view full web pages without distortion, just like on a PC. Expect to see the panel in consumer-ready products sometime in 2014.
