TomTom Android Navigation App Coming October (Video)

After enjoying steady success on iOS for the iPhone and iPad, TomTom will finally bring its GPS Navigation app to Android smartphones this October. The news came directly from the Dutch navigation systems maker itself at IFA 2012 this morning, so there’s no doubt that it’s on its way. In fact, you can view a quick demo of it in the video above.

While there aren’t many navigation apps for Android, TomTom will have to compete with the likes of Google’s popular Maps application, which could prove to be tough. Fortunately, TomTom has one feature that Google has not mastered just yet: offline navigation. The app only needs Internet connectivity when searching for real-time traffic data and locating police speed traps. VP of mobile at TomTom believes “there is no need for connectivity to do routing.” With that in mind, the app will be available in 24 regional versions, including maps for Europe, North America, South America, Asia and Australia.

No word on pricing or an exact release date, but TomTom assures us the purchase includes lifetime map updates.
