Remember the guy who claimed his Galaxy S III exploded only to be exposed as a fraud who microwaved his own smartphone? Well, another person has stepped forward nearly a year later to claim an exploding Galaxy S3 story of his own. This one may actually be true.
A guy going by the username “vizionx1208″ posted his nightmare story and pictures of the aftermath on Reddit just hours ago. Vizionx1208 says he woke up in the middle of the night to his Galaxy S3 burning on his bed, where he was fast asleep seconds prior mind you. He quickly poured water on the flaming handset, only to find that it had been completely destroyed along with his bed sheets and foam mattress topper. The frantic Galaxy S3 owner also burned his finger while putting out the small fire. The device was supposedly all stock (software/hardware) without any third party accessories attached, but he admits he left it charging for 45 minutes before he woke up to a horrible burning smell. Photos below show more of the carnage.
Last night at about 3:15am EST, about 1 hour after I plugged it in and went to sleep, I was awoken by a loud noise and a weird squeaking sound. I charge my phone while I’m sleeping on my bed right next to me. So, I woke up, and saw a ton of smoke coming out of my phone – it also smelled really bad. Half asleep, I jumped out of bed and turned the light on, only to see that my phone was just beginning to go on fire. I dumped a glass of water I had in the room on it to stop it from burning, then woke up my brother to come help. The smoke smelled so bad and wafted through the entire second floor of my house. I had a foam mattress pillow top that had a hole burned through it too, which we later threw out because it was still burning throughout. Also, some of the plastic on my phone was melting and kind of shooting out of it, and some landed on my pinky finger and burned some skin off – very small burn though. Does anyone have any suggestions what I should do? Call Verizon? Samsung? Have a lawyer call them? I’d also like to get some type of replacement phone in the meantime.
Vizionx1208 repeatedly commented in the thread that he is not seeking to “cause a big legal shit-storm” or “milk anyone” for what happened. He simply wants to be compensated for the objects that were destroyed, which he hinted should include a new phone, bed sheets and mattress. “I’m a reasonable person; I just want to be made whole,” he added. It’s too early in the process to confirm whether his story checks out and if it happened the way he explained, but we’ll be sure to follow-up in the event that Samsung takes action. If true, it’s a good thing he woke up when he did or else things could have ended much worse.
