Samsung Galaxy S IV to Appear at CES 2013? (Rumor)

There’s an interesting rumor floating around concerning Samsung’s plans for the 2013 Consumer Electronics Show, otherwise known as CES, which is scheduled to take place in Las Vegas from January 8-11. We’ve already heard that the Korean company may showcase a new 4.99-inch FHD Super AMOLED display with 1080×1920 resolution and 441 pixel density. Now, we’re hearing that it may be part of a next-generation smartphone product launch. The flagship Android handset in question is said to be the Samsung Galaxy S IV. Along with the massive 1080p display, sources claim the followup to the Galaxy S III will sport the Exynos 5450 quad-core Cortex-A15 processor clocked at 2GHz and a 13 megapixel camera.

We’re a bit skeptical on this one. A CES 2013 appearance would mean that the Galaxy S4 would be announced just eight months after the release of the Galaxy S3. That seems unlikely due to the immense success Samsung is currently enjoying with the S3 – sales are through the roof at the moment and that trend could continue all the way through Q2 2013. Essentially, moving onto a successor so soon wouldn’t make much business sense. Of course, it’s still a plausible scenario since it wouldn’t be the first time a major device-maker shifted its annual product launch schedule by closing the gap between releases. Samsung may feel pressured to keep up with HTC’s upcoming Droid DNA smartphone, which also features a 5-inch 1080p Full HD screen and releases shortly on Verizon Wireless in December 2012. To us, however, Mobile World Congress 2013, which runs from February 25-28 in Barcelona, seems to be a more realistic possibility for the SGS4.

In any case, we’ll be at CES at the start of the New Year to film and report any new product announcements. At this point, we would be disappointed if Samsung didn’t use the conference as a platform to at least tease the 4.99″ ultra high resolution display as a prototype. After all, this is likely the screen to eventually debut on the Galaxy S IV and possibly the Galaxy Note III. Stay tuned!
