Samsung announced the Galaxy Camera (EK-GC100) at IFA 2012 today. The headlining feature of the unique point-and-shoot camera has to be that it runs Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. It’s not the first time a camera manufacturer has put Android software on a digital camera, as we’ve recently seen offerings from Polaroid and Nikon, but it’s certainly the most ambitious attempt up to this point.
The Galaxy Camera features some impressive hardware specs, including a 16 megapixel sensor with 21x super long optical zoom lens, 4.8-inch HD Super Clear Touch display with 308 pixel density, 1.4GHz quad-core processor, and 8GB of internal storage (expandable with microSD). The complete package is all powered by a rather small 1,650 mAh battery, which may not be up to par with the energy demands of the software and hardware capabilities. Aside from taking standard JPEG pictures, the Galaxy Camera can also shoot video in full 1920×1080 HD at 30fps and even has a slow motion movie mode at 720×480 120fps.
It’s unclear how much the Galaxy Camera will cost, but it’s apparently coming in multiple flavors (3G/4G/WiFi) around October 2012. After the break, we’ve posted more details and images of the device.
