Rovio Mobile Blasts Microsoft for Using Angry Birds Icon on Windows Phone 7 Site

We covered Rovio Mobile’s Angry Birds game for Android in a video review last month, but now it’s making headlines for Windows Phone 7. Last night, a new Windows Phone page went live on one of Microsoft’s websites. Near the bottom of the “tips & tricks” page, there was a section with icons for supposed WP7 games and apps. Guess what game was part of 8 icons? You guessed it, Angry Birds! Naturally, the blogosphere went crazy – thinking WP7 would have Angry Birds very soon.

Rovio Mobile was livid after learning of the situation. They made a saying, “We have NOT committed to doing a Windows Phone 7 version. Microsoft put the Angry Birds icon on their site without our permission.” The game developer also stated, “We could do a WP7 version of Angry Birds, not the issue. We have not agreed to do that (yet). Will support all relevant platforms.” Microsoft responded soon after with a short message, “It appears information was mistakenly posted to Microsoft’s website, and has been removed.”

Interesting that Microsoft feels they can pull hit games from the iPhone/Android app stores and imply that they’re coming to Windows Phone 7 without getting authorization from developers. Although, maybe Rovio Mobile is, indeed, working on Angry Birds for WP7, but doesn’t want it made public yet. After all, who wouldn’t want to make their hit game available on a platform that’s going to sport Xbox Live integration? With Microsoft’s unveiling of Windows Phone 7 just around the corner, you would think a company like Rovio Mobile would be all over that by now. Either way, the events that unfolded were entertaining for a quiet Sunday morning.
