Today, at a media event at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco, Apple announced the new iPhone 5 smartphone to the masses. Let’s start with the device specifications. The new iPhone features a larger 4-inch Retina display with 1136×640 resolution at 326 ppi and 16:9 aspect ratio, the new A6 processor which is twice as fast versus the previous A5 chip, an improved 8 megapixel iSight camera (40% faster, better low-light and noise reduction performance, Panorama, better 1080p video capture stabilization, 10-point face detection, still photos while video recording), a 1.2MP front-facing camera with 720p HD video capture, and 4G LTE connectivity. The iPhone 5 is 18 percent thinner at 7.6 millimeters and 20 percent lighter at 112 grams in weight compared to the iPhone 4S. By now, you probably know that the new iPhone will run iOS version 6 with improved Siri and Apple’s in-house navigation features.
Apple also decided to ditch the glass-back design in favor of an aluminum body which should cut down on the amount of shattered devices. To the dismay of some, the iPhone 5 will use a new “Lightning Connector” instead of the previous 30-pin connector, so users will have to purchase a separate adapter if they want to use older accessories. Thankfully, Apple has redesigned its earphones, now called EarPods, and they’ll be included with the iPhone 5 and iPod Touch 5th generation.
The iPhone 5 will be available in Black & Slate or White & Silver color options from Verizon, AT&T and Sprint at price-points of $199 for the 16GB model, $299 for the 32GB model and $399 for the 64GB model. Online pre-orders will begin on September 14 and a release date is set for 8 a.m. on September 21.
